Mattie Grooms Masopust passed away January 4, 2021 at East Georgia Regional Medical Center after an extended illness. “Mickie” as she was known to her family and friends was born on June 9, 1936 to Floyd and Annie Belle Grooms in Bulloch County and remained in Bulloch County until after graduating from Stilson High School.
Upon graduation, she attended business school in Savannah and there met and married the love of her life, George William Masopust in 1955. For the next fifty-two years they were inseparable, living in various cities and then after retiring, moving back to Bulloch County in 1991. Together, George and Mickie gardened and then Mickie would take the rewards of their labors and cook some of the most delicious meals ever consumed. Growing up in a time when hard work was admired and respected, Mickie did her share of work, but she also loved to have fun, specifically outdoor fun, including spending time on the beach, swimming, and fishing. In quieter times, she did puzzles but was an avid bird watcher. Cardinals were her favorite and it never ceased to amaze her that God had given these special birds such a beautiful color.
While there was no question that Mickie loved her children and friends, she adored her grandchildren. Mickie was a member of Lanes Primitive Baptist and when the grandchildren were younger, she and George would help out with Vacation Bible School; taking any opportunity they could to make sure the grandchildren came to know the Lord.
Mattie Masopust is preceded in death by her husband, George; her son, Tom Masopust; her parents; and her brother, Waldo.
She is survived by and will be greatly missed by her daughters, Janna Lewis (Eddie) of Stilson, and Joy Tucker of Stilson; her son, Tim Masopust (Mercy) of Mississippi; her grandchildren, Matthew, Daniel and Lucas Diamond, Thomas Masopust, and Elder Andrew Tucker; a great grandson, Desmond Diamond; two sisters, Mollie Bryant of Stilson and Annette Stokes (Bruce) of Stilson; a brother, Herman “Buddy” Grooms (Verna) of California.
A Celebration of Life is planned for a later date.
