Wilford (Roy) Smith

June 18, 1947 — May 3, 2021

Mr. Wilford (Roy) Smith passed away unexpectedly on Monday May 3, 2021 at his home in Statesboro, Georgia. Roy was born June 18, 1947 in Bulloch County to Waldo Smith and Dorothy Hendrix Smith. He married the love of his life, Christine Overstreet, in 1972 and they spent the next 49 years devoted to each other.

Roy served his country in the United States Army during the Viet Nam War and not only served but achieved higher acknowledgments by receiving the Bronze Star, a Sharpshooter Medal and the Viet Nam Service Award.  He was based out of Fort Gordon, GA and Fort Jackson, SC and upon leaving the Army, he returned to his hometown of Statesboro.

Roy worked in the Wastewater Treatment Plant for the City of Statesboro for more than 18 years.  Upon retiring, he became a Master Carpenter—he could build anything. When he wanted to really relax, he could be found casting a line. But his family and friends will best remember him for the jokes he could tell. He was happiest when he was making others happy.

Roy is preceded in death by his son, Jeffrey Scott Smith.

He is survived by his loving wife, Christine. Also left to cherish his memory is his daughter, Jennifer MacEwan (James); his son, Brian Smith (Star); a grandson, Dalton Smith; a host of sisters and brothers; and several nieces and nephews.

A Graveside Service will be held Wednesday, May 5, 2021 at 2:00 PM at Bulloch Memorial Gardens with Elder Jake Futch officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Disabled American Veterans at www.dav.org or the American Diabetes Association at www.diabetes.org
